Rhode Island's coast, especially around Newport, has one of the longer-documented surf histories in New England. It shares the same general cold-water Atlantic pattern as the rest of the region — nor'easters and fall hurricane swell for the most consistent surf, smaller and calmer through summer.
Real NOAA buoy data shows offshore swell typically peaking around December (averaging roughly 5.4 ft) and easing to its calmest around August (roughly 2.5 ft).
Water ranges from roughly 40°F in the coldest month to 67°F in the warmest. In the coldest stretch, a thick wetsuit (5/4mm or a semi-dry suit) with boots, gloves, and a hood is standard; by the warmest month, a 3/2mm wetsuit is the standard choice.
Of Rhode Island's 6 tracked cams, 5 are beach breaks — generally the most beginner/longboard-friendly wave type. The rest split across 1 point break.
The core etiquette rules are the same on every coast: the surfer closest to the peak has right of way, don't drop in on a rider already up, and take a few minutes to watch how a lineup is working before paddling out if you're new to a spot. See each spot's own page for etiquette notes specific to its break type.
