About Florida Surfing

Florida has surf on two different coasts. The Atlantic (east) coast picks up groundswell from Atlantic storm systems and hurricanes and is the more consistent of the two. The Gulf (west) coast is generally calmer and more wind-dependent, with its biggest swells also tied to tropical storm season. Both coasts run warm year-round.

When to Surf

Real NOAA buoy data shows offshore swell typically peaking around October (averaging roughly 4.9 ft) and easing to its calmest around July (roughly 2.3 ft).

Water Temp & Wetsuit Needs

Water ranges from roughly 71°F in the coldest month to 83°F in the warmest. In the coldest stretch, a 2mm springsuit is typically enough; by the warmest month, boardshorts or a rashguard is enough — a wetsuit is rarely needed.

Skill Level Breakdown

Of Florida's 30 tracked cams, 15 are beach breaks — generally the most beginner/longboard-friendly wave type. The rest split across 11 pier breaks, 4 jetty breaks.

Surf Etiquette

The core etiquette rules are the same on every coast: the surfer closest to the peak has right of way, don't drop in on a rider already up, and take a few minutes to watch how a lineup is working before paddling out if you're new to a spot. See each spot's own page for etiquette notes specific to its break type.
