Michigan's surf comes from the Great Lakes, not the ocean — Lake Michigan surfing is a real, if niche, freshwater surf scene documented for decades around towns like Grand Haven. Great Lakes waves are entirely wind-driven rather than swell from a distant storm, meaning conditions can change quickly and the best days often follow a strong onshore blow. No salt, no tide, and cold water most of the year.
Real NOAA buoy data shows offshore swell typically peaking around December (averaging roughly 4.6 ft) and easing to its calmest around May (roughly 1.3 ft).
Water ranges from roughly 36°F in the coldest month to 67°F in the warmest. In the coldest stretch, a thick wetsuit (5/4mm or a semi-dry suit) with boots, gloves, and a hood is standard; by the warmest month, a 3/2mm wetsuit is the standard choice.
Of Michigan's 1 tracked cam, 1 is a beach break — generally the most beginner/longboard-friendly wave type.
The core etiquette rules are the same on every coast: the surfer closest to the peak has right of way, don't drop in on a rider already up, and take a few minutes to watch how a lineup is working before paddling out if you're new to a spot. See each spot's own page for etiquette notes specific to its break type.
