About Delaware Surfing

Delaware's Atlantic coastline is short but well-known for its beach towns — Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach chief among them. It shares the same general mid-Atlantic swell pattern as neighboring Maryland and New Jersey: bigger, more consistent surf in fall and winter from nor'easters and offshore storm systems, smaller and more wind-dependent in summer.

When to Surf

Real NOAA buoy data shows offshore swell typically peaking around January (averaging roughly 4.6 ft) and easing to its calmest around June (roughly 3.0 ft).

Water Temp & Wetsuit Needs

Water ranges from roughly 41°F in the coldest month to 75°F in the warmest. In the coldest stretch, a thick wetsuit (5/4mm or a semi-dry suit) with boots, gloves, and a hood is standard; by the warmest month, boardshorts or a rashguard is enough — a wetsuit is rarely needed.

Skill Level Breakdown

Of Delaware's 3 tracked cams, 3 are beach breaks — generally the most beginner/longboard-friendly wave type.

Surf Etiquette

The core etiquette rules are the same on every coast: the surfer closest to the peak has right of way, don't drop in on a rider already up, and take a few minutes to watch how a lineup is working before paddling out if you're new to a spot. See each spot's own page for etiquette notes specific to its break type.
